External USB storage Drive, linux writing permissions.
 

Hello all,

First, I would like to say that this is more of an annoyance than a problem.

I have an external USB 500 Gig drive (a "MyBook"). It comes formatted in FAT, doesn't work for me as you are limited to file sizes. So, I reformatted with NTFS (not crazy about this either) so that I can read and write with both linux and windows.

Now here is my annoyance, under linux (suse 11.1 kde 4.1) when backing up files to the drive, i get pop ups telling me that the permissions could not be set for the file blah blah blah... oh the files do copy, but it does this for every file, and can get quite annoying!

So, if anyone knows a way to turn this off, or make a suggestion as to a different file system that is compatible with both linux and windows so that i can do away with these pop ups.....

How do you mount the drive?

Is there an fstab entry?

What parameters are passed to the drive during mounting?

Here is the fstab entry...

But please do not misunderstand, i dont have issues with writing to the drive, that happens with no problems at all, but these pop ups happen also when writing to the windows hard disk partition as well, it has nothing to do with the drive or type of drive, or any hardware.

In a nutshell... lets say i copy a file to the drive, linux obliges me, but then it pops up and says, "could not change permission settings for the file ....." or something to that affect. So what i am seeing is that linux has an attribute that windows does not (no surprise there) and linux can not set it on an nt partition.

THIS IS NOT AN ISSUE!!

The issue is this, lets say i want to back up 1,000 files, this pop up "pops up" for each and every file, i can ignore it and just click ok one time after the copy is complete, because the pop up seems to only allow one instance of itself, BUT if i do not click ok, then i cannot access any other instances of dolphin file manager until i acknowledge the pop up.

So while as i said this is not a problem, its just an annoyance, as i would like to continue to do other things while copying happens in the background.

AND PLEASE, dont respond with something like "just use xterm to copy blah blah blah" i know that i can do that, but what is the point of having a GUI if you cant use it?
