Exit X-Server to install a driver in Red Hat 9?
I'm a semi-n00b...
I am needing to install the Nvidia drivers on my Linux box but am having trouble getting out of X. When I run sh NVIDIA* from the root console, it starts up and then says that XServer is running and to close it before continuing. I tried Ctrl-Alt-Backspace but in RH9 all that does is take you back to the login screen. Any ideas? Thanks in advance... |
I advise you to make the following: switch runlevev in /etc/inittab from 5 to 3, reboot system, install driver, and edit inittab againg to boot in 5 runlevel. I've done it in such way.

Nice... thanks for the tip! I'll let you know if I have any trouble!

Otherwise you just logout
X Menu >> Logout/shutdown >> logout You are now effectively "not in X" |

Oh. ok [ I never set graphical mode for this X crash reasons] I getcha.
there should be a nice little button to click on somewhere off the X menu to allow you to boot to command line by default. This is recommended in case you ever need to recover X. I cannot remember the exact location [sorry] I I have seen it a few times in Gnome. |
