Exim seems to freak out when it sees Quit from Postfix

Hello all. We are having a strange problem. A remote host (Postfix) is sending us a multipart mime message with a 1.5MB excel spreadsheet attachment.

In the network capture we can see that the mail from, rcpt to, data communications are going fine.

The remote host starts streaming data.

we receive about 1.2MB worth of that data, then suddenly the remote host issues a "." on a line by itself and then QUIT.

When our Exim server sees that, it issues
"500 server response error, code 421"
and closes the connection.

What could be causing the problem here?

Is our Exim server not happy that it did not receive the entire 1.5MB of the message?
