executing matlab fails

I use matlab 7 for linux with debian sid.
My problem so far is that if i open xterm, and then type matlab, the thing works.
but if i do xterm -e matlab, then the splash comes up, but then the whole program terminates. i use fluxbox menu so when the xterm -e command doesn't work the menu doesn't work for matlab, it's very annoying.

what's wrong?
thanks in advance

forget about the xterm -e command bit
my main problem right now is that if i do
prov@openlight~> matlab
the thing works
but if i write
[exec] (matlab) {matlab} in the fluxbox menu,
the splash opens but then the program terminates

apparently, opening matlab 7 for linux will output an empty line back.
so if ones does something like:

[exec] (matlab) {matlab > ~/blah}

then the thing works. because if just opened without the >, the empty line has no where to go, and the whole thing terminates.
