Did you also backup and restored

No, I didn't restore the .gconf pieces. I avoided that because Gnome was already up and running and I didn't want to disturb its files. I didn't check to see if the original data in the backup had evolution files elsewhere. So, I guess Evolution is Gnome dependent, at least to the extent of using underlying Gnome or GTK stuff to store some of its data.

The backup does not have ~/.gnome2_private/Evolution but maybe that is optional.

I've already got most of the accounts manually restored, so at this point I'll just move ahead where I am, but mark the thread as solved since that makes sense, now. I won't be testing this unless I have to start all over for some unlikely reason.

.gnome2_private/Evolution contains the settings of your ISP/pop-mail addresses

All my mail servers are IMAP. So that explains it precisely.
