evolution server sign in

I had to format hard drive and install Ubuntu and when I was setting up my evolution account, all went well until I signed in. For incoming mail on POP server I receive mail fine but for outgoing mail when I type my password in I get the ENTER PASSWORD box that says Unable to authenticate to SMTP server. Bad authorization response from server. My ISP doesn't support anything other than Windows so they were not much help other than reaffirming my settings were correct and that my password was correct. Their response was "why don't you get a Windows machine?" I have one but I like playing with my Linux machine. My evolution email worked fine until I reinstalled. Any suggestions or maybe try a different email program? Thanks, Bear
