evolution sendmail problem

When trying to send email thru evolution I get this error. Any suggestions:

Error while performing operation:
MAIL FROM response error: Requested action not taken: mailbox name not allowed

Previously I have been able to send e-mail to 1/4 of the addresses attempted. The others have previously given me this error as well.

In need of email!

These are verified emails (I'm actually replying to a message)

Christer - based on other threads, you might try this: Remove all blank lines and comment blocks (comments start with a #) from the /etc/hosts file.

More info here: http://support.ximian.com/cgi-bin/xi...hp?p_faqid=438 -- J.W.

Here is a copy of my /etc/hosts file. I don't think there is anything to edit remove...

# Do not remove the following line, or various programs
# that require network functionality will fail.
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost

Should I remove the comment lines as well? I actually just tried that & it didn't make any changes to the problem. Anything else you can suggest?

Using this command line:

env CAMEL_VERBOSE_DEBUG=1 evolution

I get the following when trying to send/receive mail. I'm no pro but I don't see anything that stands out. Does anyone else see anything that could lead me closer to a solution?

[christer@localhost christer]$ env CAMEL_VERBOSE_DEBUG=1 evolution

Vfolder 'Important mail (local)' subfolder changed 'home/christer/evolution/local/Outbox'

Almost sounds like the mail server you are sending through doesn't like YOUR email address, are you sure it is correct?

Uhm, I never thought about that. I would assume it was correct but I can double check... odd if that is the problem.

It's got to be correct. It will receive mail thru the server(s) but I'm still not able to send out. I've got 3 different smtp servers to choose from & I've tried them all. I think that narrows it down to something on my end as opposed to server end.

I've done some more troubleshooting & found that I can send mail fine thru other programs like Mozilla Mail or kMail but Evolution just isn't working... are there some config files that I can play with? Perhaps something got corrupted...

Do you have the "server requires authentication" box checked on the Send Mail panel? If so, uncheck it. You do need authentication to get mail (POP3) but you don't need it to send mail (SMTP). I don't know if that will help but it's worth a try. -- J.W.

Don't know if this will help you or not but...

we had a similiar problem as you describe at work where the desktop is gnome on RH9. In addition to not always being able to mail, we found that certain attachments had the same effect.

we also found that other clients could send fine.

After a lot of testing and guessing, and talking with the ISP about where the issue lay...what I ended up doing was simply using the local SMTP on the linux box...we now only use the ISP's POP server for incoming service, but handle all MTA issues locally. This has worked well so far.

same prob here

Hey.

I'm having the exact same prob here in evolution 1.4 running on debian. And cleaning up the /etc/hosts file also doesn't make a difference.

When I use the $ env CAMEL_VERBOSE_DEBUG=1 evolution command, evolution opens and I get the following lines in my terminal:

(evolution:26746): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: g_object_set_valist: construct property "type" for object `ESplash' can't be set after construction
Vfolder 'Unread mail (local)' subfolder changed 'home/kris/evolution/local/Outbox'
changed 0 added 0 removed 0
Vfolder 'Important mail (local)' subfolder changed 'home/kris/evolution/local/Outbox'
changed 0 added 0 removed 0

This looks indeed as if the glibc is causing the problem, although this doesn't look at all like what's on http://support.ximian.com/cgi-bin/xi...hp?p_faqid=438

Please help me, I hate webmail and I love Evolution!

Thx,
kr!s

hey christer,

I've been thinkin about this issue, since I had Evolution working when I was living in belgium. It started after I moved to Australia were I still access my belgian mail account through my provider here. So I'm thinkin it might have somethin to do with the fact that I access and SMTP server which is not the SMTP server of my provider to which I'm currently connected.

Are you maybe in a similar situation?

thx for your reply

Lightbulb PROBLEM SOLVED

Indeed, I was right! It's extremely stupid, but I only now tested it.
The problem has indeed to do with the use of e-mail accounts through a provider that is not the provider of the e-mail address. You can indeed receive mail using the POP server of your e-mail provider, but to send mail you have to use the SMTP server of you ISP (Internet Service Provider). This actually makes sense if you know how POP and SMTP servers work.

cheers,
kr!s
