Evolution problem
 

I have always used Evolution in Mandrake and never had this problem. I just installed Dropline-Gnome so I could have evolution again and I'm having problems with the SMTP settings. I set it up the same way I set up ALL mail clients. Heres the deal:

Under host: mail.whatever.org
Server requires auth. is checked
Username: scruff@whatever.org
Auth type is correct.

Now what happens is, when I try to send mail and it asks for my password it is asking for the pw to scruff@whatever.org@mail.whatever.org

My username is required to have the domain included in it. I even tried omitting the domain from my username and it will still say scruff@mail.whatever.org. I tried a bunch of things actually. The hostname should not be included in my username whatsoever, but it won't let me do otherwise. It didn't do this in the previous evolution version, and it doesn't do it in Outlook etc.

Anyone else had and solved this problem?

Scruff - my recommendation is to uncheck the "requires authentication" flag on the SMTP option. As I'm sure you know, SMTP is for outgoing mail, and POP3 is for incoming. Obviously, to get your mail, you want to have a secure login, but for outgoing, I'm not sure there's any benefit, nor is there any significant risk (unless of course your PC is totally unsecure and pretty much anybody could walk up to it and send out Emails under your name.) At least that's just my 2 cents, I should emphasize that I am definitely not an Email expert. However, as I recall, I ran into the same trouble initially with not being able to send any Email out, but did some Googling, and figured out that the "requires auth" flag on outgoing mail was the sticking point. I took it off, and everything's totally cool. (Of course, you definitely want to keep the requires auth flag set for the incoming POP3 option). It's been a while since I've had to deal with Evolution configuration, but that's what I remember anyway -- J.W.

Amazingly enough, you're suggestion worked J.W.. I use my web hosting service for SMTP (squirrelmail) and I was always under the impression that they required authentication (username/password). I'm sure I read that somewhere, but it seems to work without so I'm not complaining.

ehdwuld: Sendmail would have been my next option, but I know it take some work to get it secure enough to want to leave it running. Not that I mind work, but it's my understanding that it is never really all that secure regardless.
