Evolution and university e-mail

my university gives me instructions on how to set up my university e-mail in microsoft outlook, i tried following the same things in evolution but i get the error:

Error while Fetching Mail.

Could not connect to Connection refused

so my guess is i configured something wrong with POP. here are the step-by-step instructions given to me by the university.

# Click the START button on the taskbar.
# Go up to SETTINGS.
# Go over and open the CONTROL PANEL folder.
# Double click the MAIL icon.
# Click ADD in the "MS Exchange Settings Properties" window.
# Click OK.
# In the "Mail Account" field type in MAILHOST.
# In the "Name:" field type in YOUR NAME.
# In the "E-mail address:" field type YOUR USERNAME@MAILHOST.NJIT.EDU.
# Click on the SERVERS tab.
# In the "Incoming mail (POP3):" field type MAILHOST.NJIT.EDU.
# In the "Outgoing mail (SMTP):" field type MAILHOST.NJIT.EDU.
If you are accessing the internet via an Internet Service Provider,
you must contact them for this information.
# In the "Account name:" field type YOUR USERNAME.
# In the "Password:" field type YOUR ACCOUNT PASSWORD.
# Click OK.
my setting are:

Server Type: POP
Username: ra99 <--that's my university username

Have you checked your firewall settings? Maybe you're blocking a specific response...

well i have setup gmail with evolution also and that's working fine, so i don't think it is a firewall problem.
