Evolution 1.4.5 send mail problems
 

After a lot of problems installing Slackware the last three weeks (still not done) I finally got Evolution working, but I still have an annoying problem. When I try to send mail using my ISPs SMTP server it simply refuses, giving the error: "Unable to authenticate to SMTP server.
Bad authentication response from server." Trying the exact same settings (seemingly) in Mozilla the mail delivers without any problems. Does anyone have a clue on how to fix this? Is there a settings file somewhere that I could edit? I solved the problem by installing sendmail and using my own smtp server, but I guess I shouldn't have too.

Check for supported Authentication types in Evolution by clicking on *Check for supported types* in the sending mail settings

It should return some value, like Login, NTLM/SPA etc...

It will automatically set the supported type

Just type in your username and check *Remember this password*

When u send a mail, evolution will ask you for a password..

And thats it....should be fine

If you have already done all this, then check what is the Server Type, maybe u have set it as sendmail for a SMTP server

In your settings, is the "Use authentication" box checked for sending mail? If so, uncheck it. You do need to use authentication to get mail, but there is no need to use authentication for sending mail. I was facing the same problem as you describe, and this fixed it for me.

My ISP actually require Authentication for using their SMTP service. I ran Red Hat before I installed Slackware and had not problems there.

I just installed Slackware 9.1 and have Evolution 1.4.5 running. You ever get this resolved? I am having the same issues. I have used Evolution in the past and never had any issues until this version on Slackware. Also using Thunderbird and Outlook on my WinXP box doesn't have any issues.

I never really resolved the problem completely under slackware, so I decided to install Red Hat...again. No problems here (no sound though).

If you can't figure it out, I suggest you use sendmail on your own computer as your smtp service, it worked for me. :)

I don't want to really set up sendmail on this machine. Also I have always used my hosting companies mail servers for all the email accounts I have and it's never been a issue. I will keep looking into it though....

there is (was) a bug in glibc (2.3.2) with gethostbyaddr that misparsed /etc/hosts.
search for the thread on the evolution mailing lists, and i think it's in their faq, too.

they tell you to clear any extra white space and commented lines from /etc/hosts.

in my situation, after cleaning, it still just used whichever the last line was in /etc/hosts, regardless of ip address.

Yes! It works! You do not know how happy I am now! :D Much appreciation. I deleted all the comments and space and just left the IP's and domain/machine names.
