Some things to consider. What is on the other end of the cable? A router? Another system?

If it is a router, or hub, then a standard cable should work. If it is directly connected to another system, you need a cross over cable without a hub or router. That is the physical part.

If you have the correct hardware, then is the cable known to work? Test it on another system, make sure the cable is good.

I know nothing about the software you are using. On linux you have to issue a a command to activate the port. ie 'ifconfig eth0 up' would activate eth0. Look into the system software to see how to activate the port.

I have a small loopback that I use to light up the lights.
