Eterm and incorrect display of mc

I have installed Eterm for its nice pseudo-transparency feature; but when I start mc in Eterm, it messes up the ASCII-layout of mc, using completely wrong symbols where lines should be etc. These symbols are too wide, so that the lines break irregularly etc. I wonder whether there is a way around that. Xterm displays mc correctly on my machine.

Can anyone help?

is eterm xterm or rxvt based? try changing your exported TERM variable, it can help in some situations.

TERM contains xterm; the only hints of rxvt on my system are in /usr/share/terminfo/r where there are a number of non-readable files.

I don't know whether Eterm (www.eterm.org) is actually based on anything. As it is highly configurable, which seems to be its primary selling point, I suppose it's its own thing.
