/etc/init.d/gdm restart - from logged in user

Hi,

I need to restart gdm from a user that is logged into the GUI account. Meaning I have the command in a gnome-panel button:

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart

when I run this command the session logs out but never back in. Is there a way around this problem?

Wouldn't sufficiently "ending" the X-session take you back to gdm? I know my display manager (kdm) does when the session ends.

And I will have to ask the obligatory question of "why" since the user is already logged in, and can, at best, only relogin (maybe with different credentials) from gdm.
