essential libraries I need

I have a quick question. It seems that everytime I go to install new software, it's asking for some new libraries. I was wondering if anyone knew where I can go to get the latest libraries? Also, does anyone have experence upgrading KDE from version 2.2 to 3.0, because I have some questions about that.

you only need to install what it takes to satisfy the deps of the program you are installing. search google for whatever you need to download. just make sure you check the version requirements of what your installing.

if you install from tarballs you need to run ldconfig so the libraries are ready to go, sometimes they are there and the machine doesn't know. use locate ie 'locate .so.' to list the libraries, and check /etc/ has their locations included.
