Cool Essential Applications for Linux..?

Well I was wondering if someone could tell me what are some of the essential applications that they must/will have on their linux computer.. Like maybe AbiWord, or GIMP or something. I'm a newbie to linux by the way, so if you state your application, if you had time, could you briefly write what is it for, and is it a requirement to have that desktop environment (like GNOME or KDE)? Something maybe like Konqueror or something.

You are working backwards - major distros have everything you'd consider essential with information about what it does. What is essential for you is personal. The main thing is to get away from thinking in terms of brand-names and start thinking in terms of function.

Think "e-mail client" not "thunderbird". See?

Some distributions will give you a selection of packages to install, and explain what they are as part of the choice. Others install a default set covering most commonly requested tasks, and provide additianal packages online. Again, descriptions come with.

Certain proprietary (legacy) OSs supply almost nothing of what most people seem to want to do, or provide the most minimal solutions for specific tasks. Free OSs are not like that - they tend to provide full versions of high quality solutions for most of what you can think of.

Enjoy.

I agree with simon. Also, a list would vary wildly depending on what you use your PC for....
