Error with glxgears

I am getting the following errors when I use the glxgears..

Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
glxgears: Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual.

What kind of error is this. Can neone tell me how to get rid of it.

do you have :
load "glx"
in your X configuration file ?

either /etc/X11/XF86Config
or /etc/X11/xorg.conf
