Hello,

Is that all the output you get? And if anything, just install the dependencies it is asking for. If you run into any problems, let us know, and post the full output of the errors.

Cheers,

Josh

From the command line, run the following:
Code:

apt-get clean
apt-get update
apt-get install python-gtk2

After performing that, let me know if the python-gtk2 package installed, or is already installed. From that point after letting me know what happens, I should be able to steer you in the proper direction in order to get this resolved. If it installs though, try installing gimp again, and let me know what happens.

this is the terminal output...

python-gtk2 is already the newest version.
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:

libgme0 freepats libwildmidi1 libcdaudio1 libmimic0 tsconf lib32z1
libmusicbrainz4c2a libcelt0-0 librtmp0 libofa0 libmms0
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.

while trying to install gimp again...but same dependencies error.

Code:

apt-get autoremove
apt-get clean
apt-get update

After performing that, let me know if that helps. I run fedora on my laptop, and I don't have apt-get installed on my system.

Hmm... Can you post the full output of when you run the following?
Code:

apt-get install gimp
This seems like a so simple problem.....

quazisaad 04-30-2011 11:13 PM

ok here goes...

quazisaad@qs-ubuntu-1104:~$ sudo apt-get install gimp

Code:

apt-get remove --purge libgegl
apt-get clean
apt-get --reinstall libgegl

That should do it. If not, then it might be something with corrupted files, and/or a problem with the package coming from the repos.

Try the following:
Code:

apt-get install libgegl*
I really don't know why this package is giving you so much trouble. Any one else on this matter?

quazisaad 05-01-2011 12:03 AM

josh thanks again for yr help...but i am really dumb struck...i am using linux from the very begining. experimental basis at first. on/off relationship. last two years using it vigorously. never i hv faced this kind of problem.

thanks again josh...anyone care to fill in...

Not sure why you're encountering dependency problems. I've been running 64-bit Natty with an LXDE desktop since the alpha release. No problems installing GIMP via synaptic. There's something screwy going on with dependency resolution. I've got libgegl-0.0-0 installed, but not libgtk-3-0. Dependencies listed for libgegl-0.0-0 are:
Quote:

libbabl-0.0-0
libc6 (>=2.11)
livbairo2 (>=1.2.4)
libgcc1 (>=1:4.1.1)
libgdk-pixbuf2.0-0 (>-2.21.6)
libglib2.0-0 (>=2.24.0)
libilmbase6 (>=1.0.1)
libjpeg62
libopenexr6 (>=1.6.1)
libpango1.0-0 (>=1.14.0)
libpng12-0 (>=2.26.0)
libsvg2-2 (>=2.26.0)
libstdc++6 (>=4.1.1)
zlib1g (>=1:1.1.4)
Hope I copied them correctly. I'd try installing the dependencies, one at a time using apt-get, then do an
Code:

apt-get install gimp
