error trying to get usenet / pan to work

I'm trying to get my news server working so I can check a newsgroup for my CS class from my home computer. I set up PAN using their little wizzard and didnt have a email address set up yet (just got my dsl modem today) so I didnt put a valid one in, im not sure if that matters. Anyway I get this error when i try to download a list of groups:

News Server handshake failed: 501 Bad Command Usage

I have my outgoing mail sever set up and i think i had everythnig it asked for except the email. I use Fedora, still on core 1.

the email address isn't important. if you followed the wizard, and filled in everything correctly, it should work. you're using the news server from your isp, right?
if it's not recognizing the handshake, you might need to call your isp and see if there is something wrong on thier end...

Yes I am using my isp's news server. They said the wouldnt have the DSL even activated till another 5 days but it woks now so I think they were full of it and my guess is that as long as I have internet their news servers are running and it should be able to work.
