Ok, so im off to my next step in linux word,,,, Trying to play a DVD using Xine..... ok, heres my story so far,,,,,,, I first poped in the DVD hoping that it would already work... well it turns on, and starts to play, i think, O MY GOD< finally something that requires no effort to get started..... I was wrong,,, soon after the copyright screen it has a intro screen before going into the dvd menu screen. It plays the intro screen, then as soon as its about to go to the next screen i get a window titled Error,, windows subject is (Error reading Nav packet)..... SO,,,, here i go thinking ill try anthoer player... I try Totem,,,, does the same thing. Hum,,, maybe i need a new version of software.... I start prowling around on the next and find Xine version 0.9.9,,, i think,,,, Somehow i manage to install it... And i flip it on, stick in the DVD,,, and thier the error is again... SO, i start prowling the forum,,,, read some forum about stting something to -1... well i do that,, and it still give me the error but now the screen loads better. Then i try something that sets the CDROM to DVD though linux commands, and it doesnt work.... THen i just start typing random commands in that i see on the subject matter,,, (yeah im a genius)... still no luck... I come to you again board, all might god of the OS that we know as awesome,,, "LINUX" please help LOL>>.. thanks again guys for putting up with me =0
OK, i have downloaded these 2 packages, libdvdread and libdvdcss,,,, um,, how do you install,,,, i tried unzippping tar -xzvf package name,,, so thier it is try a ./configure,,,, nothing thier,,,, try a make... nothing thier,,, try a make install nothing thier.... SO, um, what am i missing getting these 2 packages installed?
The problem may lie in the codec you are using. See if you can change the playback codec for the dvd in preferences. When I started my dvd playback it was garbled. When I went looking for a replacement player I chose xine/gxine. Both gave me the same error you received. I then gave up and went back to mplayer. This is when I had the idea that it may not be decoding it properly, so I staretd working in preferences switching out the codec.
In mplayer the codec is set to "auto". What I did was work through each codec till i found one that worked for me. I finally found that the "xv" codec seemed to work. When I exited and restarted I received an error about the program not being able to initialize alsa. Since alsa has always given me problems I chose to "detect sound card" (using that little app). (Note: It normally takes me 3 attempts at that to get the sound to play through the detection procedure.)
I chose a different sound codec (oss). This worked for me right away, and continues to work every time I launch the player. Audio in linux sucks the big witches titty. Always has.
Mplayer seems to be able to play back video without actually mounting the dvd first. But when you do this you won't be able to play audio. If you for get, like me, as I forget all the time to mount the DVD, just close mplayer, mount it, and restart mplayer.
Pretty pathetic problem, all things considered. When something says it supports dvds it should support them and work correctly. A bit more work on the author's part to ensure that it tests for the best codec and if it is different than the default it should prompt you and give you an option to switch back after x number of seconds if it doesn't work.
Install libdvdcss. It fixed my problem... probably because the linux distro isn't legally allowed to distribute the de-CSS code. I didn't have to re-install Xine, just installed the library and Xine automatically detected it's availability. (/me pleasantly surprised, was expecting to have to recompile Xine).
I have no idea why this didn't work for you the first time... if it still doesn't, post or e-mail the command line output and I'll see if I can figure it out...
BTW, Jimbo, AFAIK it's illegal to distribute the libdvdcss library because it allows a person to circumvent the DVD copy protection scheme. Never mind that I legally own the DVD, and the whole reason I bought it is to watch the content (no, I buy DVDs to look at the shiny colors....). Just some gay laws that are pointless and ineffectual.
I donwloaded the source from the site given by: thr33. It compile and intall but I am still geting the same error.
This is the cmd output I get:
This is xine (X11 gui) - a free video player v0.99.2.
(c) 2000-2004 The xine Team.
libdvdnav: Using dvdnav version 1-rc5 from http://xine.sf.net
libdvdread: Encrypted DVD support unavailable.
libdvdnav: DVD Title: METROPOLIS
libdvdnav: DVD Serial Number: 2C48737C
libdvdnav: DVD Title (Alternative):
libdvdnav: Unable to find map file '/root/.dvdnav/METROPOLIS.map'
libdvdnav: DVD disk reports itself with Region mask 0x00f20000. Regions: 1 3 4
It's still not using the libdvdcss for decrypting the DVD. libdvdnav might not be finding the libdvdcss library; if so, running ldconfig should correct the problem.
If it doesn't, try installing from RPMs... http://cambuca.ldhs.cetuc.puc-rio.br/xine/ has the RPMs you'd need. I think installing libdvdcss-1.2.8-2.network.i386.rpm by itself should work, but if it doesn't, try uninstalling xine and reinstalling from RPMs, following the directions on that website.
Or... switch to Slackware. Part of the problem with some distros is that they organize files differently. Slackware's goal is provide a "standardized" Linux distro... with a modicum of Linux knowledge, Slackware runs smoother and cleaner than most other distros I've tried.
Let me know if that doesn't work... I'll try to think of what else it could be. The possibility still exists that I'm just wrong...
I got it to work some time ago, but I forgot to post how I did it.
I did not had the libdvd-devel package, so I got that (I love yum). After that I still had to change the video codec from auto to something else. I don't remember now which is it, but I know is not xv. When I get home I'll post the codec name.
And that's it... now is working. All I need to do now is to get it to work for the rest of the users, not only for root
Well, I decided I wanted to try and watch a movie (titanic) while working on a game I'm making and some stupid "Error reading Nav Packet" message pops up. I had no idea what this meant so I immediately came here and searched for "Nav error DVD" . Found this thread and learned all I had to do to fix it was d/l and install libdvdcss and run ldconfig.
Now, watching movies on a laptop is cool, but watching movies on a laptop on linux is just plain god like =)
Downloaded and untarred libdvdcss but cannot find or execute any config-file in any of the subdirectories.
("bash: ./config: No such file or directory")
Distribution: RHEL, Ubuntu, Solaris 11, NetBSD, OpenBSD

Hi locust,
If you look above, or in the directory you've untarred the libdvdcss tarball in to, you should see that what you're looking for is actually ./configure
And thanks for the advice above from doody to run ldconfig - sorted this NAV packet error message for me!
Cheers,
Steve
