Question error opening file

HI !!

Im trying to open .tar.gz but I recived the follwing error :
# tar -xvf MailTools-1.50.tar.gz
tar:This does not look like a tar archive
tar: skeeping to the next header
tar: error exit delayes from previos errors.

I tried to open some others tar.gz and I recive the same errors.

what can I do ?

well ,it worked in some files but in others I recieve:
#tar -zxvf file-temp-0.14.tar.qz

gzip:stdin:unexpected end of file
tar:child returned status 1
tar:error exit delayed from previos errors .

what can I do ?
also where can I find answars to error masseges from LINUX?
