Error installing RPM 4.1 in Gentoo

I am trying to switch my Maya workflow over to Gentoo Linux and while instaling RPM 4.1, one of its dependantcies, I get the following error while attempting to "make" the file:
Code:
make[3]: *** [legacy.lo] Error 1
make[3]: Leaving directory `/root/rpm-4.1/rpmdb'
make[2]: *** [all] Error 2
make[2]: Leaving directory `/root/rpm-4.1/rpmdb'
make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/root/rpm-4.1'
make: *** [all] Error 2
Any suggestions?[

Well, first off, with Gentoo: why not just install the version of RPM in portage? secondly, is there a particular reason you even need RPM? (Mainly curiousity)

It is a requirement for installing Maya on linux distros other than Red Hat.

How would I go about doing that?

just like installing anything else under gentoo. "emerge <PROGRAM>"

You can do "emerge RPM". Though I do encourage you to look at the portage availablity: maya 5.0.1 is available just by doing "emerge maya".

Well, I tried that and the error I get is:

Code:
make[2]: *** [digest.lo] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory `/var/tmp/portage/rpm-4.2.1/work/rpm-4.2.1/rpmio'
make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/var/tmp/portage/rpm-4.2.1/work/rpm-4.2.1'
make: *** [all] Error 2

!!! ERROR: app-arch/rpm-4.2.1 failed.
!!! Function src_compile, Line 46, Exitcode 2
!!! (no error message)
!!! If you need support, post the topmost build error, NOT this status message.
Any other suggestions?
