Error installing NVIDIA kernal driver

When installing the NVIDIA kernal driver on Redhat 8.0(newest kernal version) I get the following error and X won't start up. modules.config does contain the line "alias char-major-195 nvidia" so I don't understand why it doesn't work.

modprobe: Can't locate module nvidia

Failed to install nvidia.o

Try instialising the module yourself from the shell.

insmod NVdriver

I think that is the name of it. If you type NV then tab complete it usually does it for me. Check that you have installed both rpm's and that the line is correct in modules.config.

Worse comes to the worse, I would download the source and compile it yourself - works better IMO - and is not that hard to do.
You did install the kernal and GLX rpm's right?

the module nvidia.o must reside under a subdirectory of /lib/modules/$(uname -r), probably video. try

find /lib/modules/$(uname -r) -name nvidia.o
If not there, you might not have installed it.

also...did you make sure when installing the RPMs(you did you use RPMs right?) did you have any errors? What version of the drivers are you working with? worse comes to worse...just remove the drivers(rpm -e NVIDIA_GLX, same for NVIDIA_kernel) and reinstall the drivers, watch for errors, In my experience, this happens when there is a problem installing, but yet RPM says "install successfully" giving some people the false sense of sucessfully installation
