Error in MPlayer with video out. Can't find codec-dir.

I just installed MPlayer and I kepp getting "Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device". First I thought it was the codecs, so I started to download some. And that's another problem, I can't find the codecs folder for MPlayer.First the codec manual said the path would be /usr/local/lib/codecs/, but it doesn't exist, so now I don't know. If anyone could help me fix this I would be so greatful.

I'm on a Compaq PIII
with MPlayer (came with the installation)
under Etch
256 MB

Thanks!
Tell me if I forgot anything.

Hi,

Depending on your mplayer version they could be located elsewhere, try: /usr/lib/mplayer/codecs

Hope this helps.

Doesn't exist, but thanks anyway. I can't find out what version it is, but it was sownloaded with Debian 4.0. I tried the About MPlayer, but it didn't say anything. Also, I see that it's not possible to select video drivers and configure them.

Acording to Synaptic it's 1.0~rc1-12etch1.
