error: C preprocessor "/lib/cpp" fails sanity check

hi,

I am new to linux. I just installed fedora core 2.I want to hear mp3 songs. So i tried to install xine for that purpose. i installed it from tettang.

I installed the following packages:
xine-lib-1.1.1.tar.gz
xine-ui-0.99.4.tar.gz

Then, i unpacked xine-lib-1.1.1.tar.gz by tar xfvz xine-lib-1.1.1.tar.gz. Everything was ok

Then, i did cd xine-lib-1.1.1.tar.gz, that too ok

Then, ./configure . Here i got one error exactly like this

checking how to run the C preprocessor... /lib/cpp
configure: error: C preprocessor "/lib/cpp" fails sanity check

What should I do now?
nothing works after that !!! no make and no install...
Plz help me out !!! m bugged up ! and do lemme know the whole procedure including where i.e. in which directories these files will be installed and how to run those after installation.

Hope to get a reply soon.Thanks.

Ehm... if the manual compilation doesn't work for you, you could try to install xine rpm-packages. They can be located either on the installation cd (I think, haven't used FC for a loooong loooong time), or they can be fetched from internet somewhere (try http://rpm.pbone.net/ for example). Then go to the console type "rpm -ivh package_name.rpm" and voila. Install first xine-lib, then the ui-package. You may well get errors telling you that some packages are missing. You'll have to download and install those packages as well.

Though you could also try some other alternative players. Xine isn't really a music player, but more a video player (though it can of course play both). You could give XMMS a try (very similar to older WinAmp versions). Otherwise just google around a bit; search for something like "audio player linux"...

The error itself seems really bizarre to me. Something wrong with FC installation may be?
