error after booting windows through vmware

Hi,
I have slack and xp dual boot.
While in slack, I want to boot xp through vmware server.
Ive setup vmware server, vmx, and vmdk setup successfully. (or maybe not)
I copied the mbr to the same directory as all of the other v* files.

I start vmware and windows boots.

Just after the windows splash screen shows, I get the following error.

Quote:
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
Check for viruses on your computer. Remove all newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

Technical information:
*** stop 0x00000007b (0xf9e6a524, 0x0000034,0x00000000,0x00000000)
I did a fresh install of windows so most of the above problems probably don't apply.

Has anyone else had this problem and how did they resolve it?

Your response would be much appreciated.

okos

[edit] Is there a way to disable this protection? Or a work around? [/edit]

It may be some device driver that is loading because you installed on hardware that is mucking things up in the VM world. have you found anyone with similar problems via a web search?

Yep
There are lots of posts on the issue.
This one seem to be the most informative:
http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt...00000007b.html

I don't think I will be able to boot the raw disk.

It seem that xp is having trouble connecting to the hd.

In order to avoid booting twice into the same os at the same time, I guess you have to separate the physical boot mbr from the virtual mbr. The virtual mbr is located on my linux partition. Just maybe that might be the problem?

I have no problem booting xp with the physical mbr. The problem only resides in booting virtually.

I am not sure about about VMWARE, but I was using xen and booting from the physical media, what I had to do is choose to boot from the hard drive then all I had to was make sure the default OS selection was windows to make sure that the same linux install didn't try to boot in the VM as well. Is there any way you can use the actual hard drive MBR with VMWare?

Ive been fiddling with this for a while now.

I reinstalled xp through vmware on the physical disk successfully. I can now run xp through slack on the physical disk.
I thought this might solve the problem. Until...

I tried to boot xp through lilo boot loader. The blue screen of death again! LOL

At this point I am not sure what to do. Ive googled several times and still have not found a workable solution.

Has anyone else successfully resolved this issue?
