ERE in Vim?

How do I make Vim use extended regular expressions?

I really wish I wouldn't have to use all these ugly backslashes to do backreferences.

Hi,

The backslashes are needed, to my knowledge there isn't a way around it.

Hope this clears things up.

EREs don't need those backslashes.

sed's -r option enables ERE, and it then doesn't need backslashes.

Sed doesn't, and a lot of other tools don't need them. Vim on the other hand does need them.....
