environment variables with java

Im trying to install a java based program, but I keep getting the error:
No Java virtual machine could be found from your PATH
environment variable. You must install a VM prior to
running this program.

I've already installed both java j2re 1.4.2 and j2sdk 1.4.2. If you have any help e-mail at lilrowdy18@netscape.net or AOL Instant Messenger name lilrowdy18. Thanks.
