Ensure Nouveau not installed on Centos 7 Software Update

I have an old graphics card that uses the nvidia-304xx kernel module from el-repo. I want to ensure Software Update does not try to replace that with its standard Nouveau driver. Is there a way I can do that?

Can I confirm current list of update packages do not contain the Nouveau driver using yum? What would be the correct form for the command?

Thanks,

Nouveau is part of the kernel, not a seperate package. The only way to ensure it wasn't in your distro would be to recompile the kernel, removing support for that module. It's far easier to blacklist the module so that even though it's available, it will never be loaded by the kernel.

just fallow the RedHat/CentOS/SL instructions for installing the Nvidia driver ( the Akmod-nvidia,kmod-nvidia,NVIDIA.run )

old graphics card that uses the nvidia-304xx
for that you might want to use the use the .run

Solved: blacklist a kernel module

Thank you, Timothy. That was just enough information for me to proceed.

To blacklist a kernel module in Centos 7,
cd /usr/lib/modprobe.d

My system already had one listed,
blacklist-nouveau.conf
which elrepo added for me when I installed nvidia-304xx.

The single active line in this file is,
blacklist nouveau

So I didn't have anything to worry about, but feel better now that it's confirmed.
