Encrypted wmv

I've been given a .wmv file, which I can normally play, but this one is encrypted with ProtectCodec. I was also given a copy of ProtectCodec.exe to unencrypt it. Unfortunately, when I tried to run that under Wine, it started to attempt a virus check, got lost, and hung up. Does anyone know of Linux software to do the job? Needless to say, I have googled, and searched this site.

"Having been given" a protected media file can mean two things: either somebody paid for it or it's a scam. If somebody paid for it then there's bound to be licensing issues. LQ is not the place to ask for ways to dodge licensing issues. OTOH the PE name just doesn't sound right. Seen http://www.ca.com/se/en/securityadvi...53142553#tools ?

If somebody gave me a commercial DVD, that would be protected, but I could still play it legally. I do not (to the best of my knowledge) deal in pirated material.

OK, how about the second part of my reply then?

I've just followed up your link. No wonder the 'decoder' didn't decode! The man who gave it to me says he was as innocent of its nature as I, and just trying to help when I said the wmv file didn't play.
