encfs, laggy system

I just started using encfs and suffered from a very laggy system when copying files to encfs. The encfs process uses 99% of my processor and renicing didn't help at all.
The underlying fs is reiser btw.
Gentoo 2.6.15 kernel.
HDs are all IDE
3Ghz 1GB RAM

I'm not sure what makes the system so laggy. Any ideas?

Is there a way to tell the system to do a slower copy?
