Well is imapd running? If you don't have a firewall it will open once imapd is running and listening on port 143..

I started the imap service and i checked it if its running it is.....

when i telnet from the box $telnet 127.0.0.1 143 the message it prompted was
* OK [CAPABILITY IMAP4rev1 UIDPLUS CHILDREN NAMESPACE THREAD=ORDEREDSUBJECT THREAD=REFERENCES SORT QUOTA IDLE ACL ACL2=UNION STARTTLS] Courier-IMAP ready. Copyright 1998-2004 Double Precision, Inc. See COPYING for distribution information.

but when i tried to telnet outside it didn't respond, thats why perhaps i still couldn't contact my Mail Server...using my outlook express....

What could be the possible error why i cant connect via IMAP... plz help thanks

Are you getting that result from an external computer on your network? Are you behind some kind of firewall or router, etc?

I nmap it from the same machine... but when i tried to nmap it from a remote host i could not see the POP and IMAP port open. I've started the service already . is there as way on how i could debug this error? I could able to send and receive my mail on the MailDir but i could not get it from my Outlook Express because of this port not open. Thanks

What iptables / ipchains rules have you set? Do you have any firewall of sorts on the ssh server?
