I need to use my gmail account, but it only works under IE mode in Konqueror, and since it thinks it's IE, it needs Active X activated

As far as I know, there's no way you can active ActiveX under Linux at all. Actually I think the reason why many people switch from ie to Mozilla Firefox is because ie has the annoyance of regularly admitting this kind of features which can resullt in malicious attacks..
Regarding GMail, I haven't been able to make it work under Konqueror (I've tried several browser id's and tried logging in, using the "Login anyway" link...
However, Firefox is supported, along with some other browsers available for Linux.
