Does your soundcard have an onboard synth? If not (and it probably doesn't), you will need a software synth, the two main competitors being fluidsynth and timidity. I had this same problem a couple of days ago and fixed it, but in the end I decided it wasn't really worth the hassle since I never use MIDI anyway. Your other option is to get a MIDI synth, or a keyboard and plug that into your MIDI out plug in the back of your soundcard. That will then be able to play the midi files for you

a) install a software synth, unless your soundcard has an onboard one
b) run the software synth, or configure your midi player to run it
c) find an xmms midi plugin (i think there is one, but it is abandoned and at about version 0.03), or use kmid
