Middle-click will usually paste a highlighted string, but not clipboard contents. Left-click-hold-and-drag usually highlights. Double-left click will highlight a word (I just tested while drafting this reply while using Fluxbox on Slackware --Current).

Consequently, I'm not quite clear what you are asking. Do you want to have middle-click paste from the clipboard and single-left-click highlight a word, or do you want some other behavior?

(A search for X mouse settings will turn up lots of links. I don't feel competent to recommend a specific one. One hopes that will help you get started.)

It used to be that one would highlight whatever text from wherever, and then, with a middleclick one would paste it wherever.
Now this feature seems to be not there!
How do I get it back!?
Thanks, Hearthstone.

hearthstone,

Highlighting a string of text, then pasting it into another document using LibreOffice Writer using the mouse Centre button (scroll wheel) works perfectly for me.

I am using Linux Mint 18 MATE.

Examples:

text into another document

Writer using the mouse Centre button
