Empathy un-installed self (le gasp) now stuck in gtk3 dependancy hell

Playing with ubuntu 11.04 on my sisters netbook. I notice empathy was un-installed when trying to re-install I get this
Code:

empathy : Depends: libchamplain-0.10-0 (>= 0.9.0) but it is not installable
Depends: libchamplain-gtk-0.10-0 (>= 0.9.0) but it is not installable
Depends: libgck0 (>= 2.92.92.is.2.91.1) but it is not installable
Depends: libgcr-3-0 (>= 2.92.92.is.2.91.4) but it is not installable
Depends: libgnome-control-center1 (>= 1:2.91.2) but it is not installable
Recommends: nautilus-sendto-empathy but it is not going to be installed
Recommends: freedesktop-sound-theme but it is not installable
E: Broken packages

It now seems to depend on Gtk3 which is not installable with ubuntu. any ideas

does apt-get -f install or apt-get -f remove work???

Go into Synaptic and check what packages are broken. Remove the broken packages. Reboot (you shouldn't have to but I find it helps) restart synaptic and try to reinstall Empathy.

the broken packages are in the repo. so theres no way to fix them as far as I know

I don't understand what your meaning is here. If apt is telling you there are broken packages they are on your machine not in the repo where you're downloading from. Sometimes apt will say you have a broken package and rebooting will clear that. Other than that you need to look in synaptic and mark the broken packages for complete removal and then remove them. This may give you some error messages so watch what is happening and post them here.

Looking back at your initial post it appears you may have installed something at some time but not through apt/aptitude/synaptic. This may be the cause of the dependency problem but we need to work through the broken packages first.

The are gtk3 libraries missing from the repositories, that now need to be installed for some reason. Is the a way to regress the version required? The problem was likely caused when I left the Telepathy PPA(since disabled) in the source list when I upgraded

Yes you can force synaptic to install particular versions. Remove the PPA from your list, click refresh, then go into syanptic and try again. If it still has difficulty click on the application you want to install go up to the top and click Packages > Force Version and select the version you want.
