Emerge Issues with Gentoo

Hi,

I'm a COMPLETE Noob to linux and recently installed Gentoo distro on a machine with hopes of getting it running as a server for some web projects.

I was following some onlien steps to install Apache, MYSQL and PHP using Portage, and while Apache went through with the entire emerge process just fine, when went to do the same for PHP, the process never completed and I gots this error message:

collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make[6]: *** [i915_dri.so] Error 1
make[6]: Leaving directory `/var/tmp/portage/xorg-x11-6.8.0-r4/work/xc/lib/GL/me

make: *** [World] Error 2

!!! ERROR: x11-base/xorg-x11-6.8.0-r4 failed.
!!! Function src_compile, Line 266, Exitcode 2
!!! make World failed
!!! If you need support, post the topmost build error, NOT this status message.
Emerge failed.
xserver patch failed.
Check your network settings and try again.

Any emerge I've tried isnt getting past this first stage. And my X environemnt doenst seem to boot up anymore. I have no idea what caused this error or what to do to remedy it. Any assisstance would be appreciated. thanks.

the real error will be higher up than this. if you're not aware, this isn't a PHP problem, but an X build problem (the windowing system that also doesn't work) as to why this is now happening... no idea. i'm guessing that somethign else removed it, maybe you were on XFree86 before, and an emerge world removed XFree86 and started installed Xorg-x11.

do you officially have any X installed at all? run "emerge -s xorg-x11" and "emerge -s xfree86" to see if it thinks they're there. in actual fact, gentoo as now totally removed the older xfree86, so you shouldn't see any info about it at all if you're "emerge sync"'d recently.
