Red face emerge dependency problem with Python

I ran

rpm -i emerge-1.1.0-3.i686.rpm
error: Failed dependencies:
Python is needed by emerge-1.1.0-3.i686

But I have Python install.

Python 2.5 (r25:51908, Sep 20 2006, 16:44:55)
[GCC 4.1.1] on linux2
Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
