Avidemux does this fine, and is included in most distros now
Open the video file in avidemux, rebuild vbr talbe if necessary and unpack if it asks you to. Then in the side bar on the left in the Video section, select which codec you want to use, and click the filters button. Add a filter and use the subtitler filter. Then save your video, the subs will be encoded into the actual picture.
Are you sure you want to do this, especially since you're using a lossy DivX file to begin with? It makes much more sense to embed the subtitle stream into the divx file or get the original vobs and encode them with the subtitler filter.
