email w/o system users

OK, I'll put in as much detail as I know.

Current setup:
RedHat 9
sendmail: 8.12.8-9.90
procmail: 3.22-9
imap: 2001a-18
mysql: 4.0.15 standard
spamassassin: 2.44-11.8.x

This setup is running, but I don't fully understand all the configuration settings have - most of them I copied from somewhere out on the net.

I don't have a problem with removing the sendmail, procmail, and imap to get it to where I want to.

I want to get a mail server up and running that doesn't need to have a system account for every user, and if possible, I'd like the authentication to be done against MySQL.

I did some looking around and have seen PostFix as a replacement to sendmail, and Cyrus IMAP (which requires Cyrus SASL, which somehow should be able to be configured to go against MySQL) instead of the imap that comes with RedHat, but damned if I can find anything that gives me a clear, straight forward installation instructions for getting it to my final state.

Can someone post some links or advice? Maybe a different and easier configuration?

Thanks!

You might want to check dbmail-mysql.
I have no personal experience about it but it sound easier to setup than Cyrus IMAP.

Search for the package suitable for your distribution and/or check the upstream.

There's also extremail. I used to use it for my personal stuff way back when when I wanted to have different users with multiple domains. It's worth a look.
