Email Stripper

Does anyone know of a debian/Mepis program that will clean up forwarded emails. In another life I used to use a windows program called EmailStripper that did a good job. It is one of the few things I miss. Thanks for any help. Maury

Emails that have been forwarded several times end up with a bunch of garbage, addresses and >>>>
you can copy and paste the message into a stripper type program and it will strip out all the garbage then you copy the doctored message into a new post. I hope I explained that ok.

i see... hmmm... well, if the garbage content is basically the >'s and the huge address blocks it would seem this is something which could be done with a simple shell script... so i'd assume there would a nice linux tool to do this out there... i'll try to find something for you... if i do i will post it immediately... also, perhaps someone else will find something and post it before i do...

Thanks for the help. I have been a linux user for a little over 3 years and Mepis for about half of that. Most of my time is spent fixing windows problems for other people but now and then I am able to win a new convert to Mepis. This is just one of those small problems I put on the back burner that I need an anwer for. I also have my wife on a Mepis box and she is very happy with it.

Here are a couple of Thunderbird extensions that might help:

I haven't tried either of these myself.

hey those look like cool thunderbird extensions, man...

i'm not 100% sure he's using thunderbird, though...

i'm still trying to find a little tool where you can paste the text into it to have it cleaned so you can copy/paste it back into your web-based email...

oh, BTW maury0324, according to the emailStripper website:

Linux (under WINE) [is] supported.

PS: i found an online stripper, but it looks like it probably sucks:

That is what I am looking for also as I use comcast web based mail. That way I have addresses and mail I want to keep stored on line. I have removeable drives and test a lot of Distros. It makes keeping my mail managed easy. The web based cleaner may be ok. I am looking for an email with a lot of junk so that I can try it out.

I tested the web stripper and it does work though not as good as the Email Stripper running in windows
which gives you a nice word wrapped document. It will do for now. Thanks everyone. Maury

hey i just pasted one of those super-junked emails into gedit and i used the find and replace function... in the find box i put ">" and i left the replace box blank and it did a very good job cleaning it... i removed the address blocks manually, though...

PS: i tried the web-based stripper and i thought it sucked...

BTW, i'm still looking...

I use simply mepis so had to add gedit. I tried it and it worked great. There might be something better out there but I'm happy with this unless something better comes along. Many thanks, Maury
