Email/Spam Filter/Relay

I have been recently been given a small job to develop a server that could be put in place to filter all of the spam email that has been hitting our companys network. But at the same time, I'm tring to stay open source and get some software that can do the following:

Email hits the network, the server filters out the junk spam and then sends the remaining messages to a MS exchange server.

I have seen many turtorials on email filters, but these turtorial are ones that believe that, the equipment in question is also going to be the email server, not just a middle man.

Does anyone have any ideas?

you could easily start off with ipcop + copfilter to do this, or just take apart the tools it uses and reimplement on a generic distro. There may be little point / benefit in that outside of your own learning experiences.

I have been ask to us Postfix, but it has been a bear to get it running correctly, and being that I want to filter all smtp traffic, it has seemed like the only option as i continue to look. In the end I need at least basic SMTP relay to a IP addrees

Hmm? not sure what SMTP service ipcop uses, quite likely it is postfix. but certainly you can make your own with postfix, just don't set any local domains, and let the server relay for your internal domain with the relay_domains variable.
