Email Setup
I'm trying to get postfix going. I'm also attemping IMAP using courier-IMAP. I run on SuSe pro 9.1.
Currently my port 25 is down, and I'm assuming that is why i cannot ping mail.cynthiablue.net successfully. I have it configured thru the firewall okay, and Shield's Up tells me it is closed, not stealthed. So I'm assuming a service I need is not running.
Meanwhile, I'm trying to pop and imap my server from my internal network. These are the errors I get from my mail.log:
IMAP error:
Quote:
Nov 11 15:01:01 linux imapd: Connection, ip=[::ffff:10.0.0.2]
Nov 11 15:01:01 linux imapd: LOGIN, user=cynder, ip=[::ffff:10.0.0.2], protocol=IMAP
Nov 11 15:01:01 linux imapd: Failed to create cache file: maildirwatch (cynder)
Nov 11 15:01:01 linux imapd: Error: Input/output error
Nov 11 15:01:01 linux imapd: Check for proper operation and configuration
Nov 11 15:01:01 linux imapd: of the File Access Monitor daemon (famd).

POP error:
Quote:
Nov 11 15:01:04 linux pop3d: Connection, ip=[::ffff:10.0.0.2]
Nov 11 15:01:04 linux pop3d: LOGIN, user=cynder, ip=[::ffff:10.0.0.2]
Nov 11 15:01:04 linux pop3d: pop3d: No such file or directory
Nov 11 15:01:04 linux pop3d: LOGOUT, user=cynder, ip=[::ffff:10.0.0.2], top=0, retr=0

I'm curious if I need my postfix to be compiled with mySQL, and I'm using the automagic postfix that just came with SuSe 9.1, so not sure if I need mySQL in there, or if it is there.
I'm thinking perhaps I don't have pop to see the proper mail directory. It appears as though my mail directory is /var/mail/user, and this is how I have it in main.cf.
I would love some help this is driving me batty.
Thanks.

try to telnet on port 25
if you connect then you know the port is open, if not then you need to check your /etc/services file to see if it is.
DISCLAIMER-I run Slackware and red hat, you may not have a services file.

Well, services file says
smtp 25/tcp mail..
smtp 25/udp mail..
I don't understand if that means the port is open, or just defined. It looks like every port known to man is in that file.

open this with a text editor
/etc/init.d/courier-pop3
post the contents, also do a ls -l in the /etc/init.d/ directory and post that also

Okay I got port 25 open. For some reason it wasn't taking the inet_interfaces setting to all. It was rejecting that, even changing it with webmin. I had to change it in the config file then stop postfix then start it, and 25 is open now.
However, imap and pop3 are still giving the above errors. Ugh.

Yes, I can even send emails thru that telnet to port 25.
I'm really thinking I don't have my directories set up somewhere. I'm not in front of the computer anymore now... but mail is in /var/mail/user... I believe. And I see that file, and webmin can access the mail in there, but the pop and IMAP are not able to access it somehow.
Maybe the restarts are taking again, and I need to stop, then start after changing settings. Or, maybe I need to completely uninstall the postfix/imap/pop packages then reinstall them and start from scratch.
It can't possibly be this hard. When I had RH8, the email just worked. Ugh. I'm really considering Mandrake, after all the SuSe problems I've been having.

I would go Slackware, but i'm biased.
always stop and start services when changes are made, i don't trust restart scripts.
