Email server with RedHat
I want to build an email server that gives me POP access and access to email via the web.
I have heard of a few different programs that I should use but I haven;t really heard what is the best combination of programs to get what I need. email...pop3....webmail...yada yada.. Also what version of RedHat should I use. I know 9 is new and have heard you should shy away from new releases when installing a new server.... Anyway, thanks for the help. Also I would love to be able to authenticate the users on the email server against my Windows 2000 active directory. Is that possible? Thanks for the help Paul |
1) I would look into Horde/IMP (http://www.horde.org/) for your webmail needs. This works best with an IMAP backend like uw-imapd, which comes with redhat. I recommend IMAP any day over pop3. That way you can access ALL of your email from anywhere using the webmail client (horde/imp). However, you can still use the uw-ipop3d pop3 server that comes with redhat.
2) I think rh9 is far better than 8. I know 7.3 is a very stable server OS, IMHO. 3) I havent played with this much. There are some theories. Check out the samba lists for more information on this specifically. |
Haha, good luck buddy! I have lots of trouble with this. But I think I am getting close to building one from scratch. I have spend too much time trying to figure out postfix, imap, webmail blah, blah, blah.
Now I just want to get the darn thing going. Anyhow, I am looking closely at this and I think it's a good choice. http://www.delouw.ch/linux/ If this interest you, I would be happy to work together to get this going for both of us. |
I still contend that horde/imp is the most robust and featureful webmail package in the open source community....can be a bitch to set up but after that, you're golden
