Question Email server setup ideas

Hello everyone,

Here is what I am running currently:
(low volume server) approx. 150 emails per day

RH9
Sendmail 8
Procmail
Spamassassin 3.0 (invoked via procmailrc "| spamd")
Apache 2.0.40

Email is in mbox format located in /var/spool/mail/"user"
All mail checked via POP3 clients on other machines.

Works great, but....
_____________________________________________________

Here is what I want to change.

I would like to change to IMAPS clients.
I would like to add webmail access with something like SquirrelMail.

Assume the following:
IMAPS is installed and running.
Apache and PHP are installed and functional.

_____________________________________________________

Questions:

1) Do I need to change settings in the Sendmail config to use IMAPS, or does Sendmail not care what type of client reads the email in the current mbox directories?

2) What do you think about SquirrelMail, are there better/ simpler choices for webmail?

3) Any other considerations that you can think of.

Thank you very much for any ideas that you may have.

Robert

mhiggins,

Thank you for the reply.

How about the change to imap? What needs to be changed as far as Sendmail is concerned?

Thank you

I depends on the imap impl ... if you use uw-imap there is no change. It will access the standard mbox files. Note that this can be quite slow when the file gets big! Some users tend to never split there mail up. You could use cyrus which stores data in its own database but this means you would have to import the old mail into the new server. I don't know if there are any new tools for this but when I did it I had to run both servers on the same box .. the cyrus server on an off port and I wrote a perl script to connect to both servers as each user in the password file an copy the mail into the new inbox.

With that said, this being a "(low volume server)" you should have no problem using uw-imap. My current setup for my home mail is OpenBSD, uw-imap, imp, Turba (address book), mysql, apache, Running on an i-Mac (rev a 266MHz, 128MB).

mhiggins,

Thank you again,

I am planning on using uw-imap because it is the default RH9 imap server and it is already setup and running. I also like the idea of not having to change from mbox to maildir.

That said:

Do I simply stop the ipop3d service and then connect to the imapd server with the clients reconfigured to connect using imap?
