Hi,
I'm running edgy and whenever I run emacs it displays little boxes at the bottom of the window.

i think i know what you mean. raw emacs is a plit screen type of thing.
put this in you ~/.emacs file and see if you like it better.
Code:
(setq pop-up-frames t)

nope, I gave your suggestion a try but it didn't work.
I don't have a .emacs file so I created a plain text file with just the line you gave me.

It looks more like an error than something cosmetic

the squares look like the ones you get when a font is missing

I've seen the same thing happen in Ubuntu. Trying to change the
"font" using mule -> and setting Courier worked for that session.
Saving it and restarting resulted in emacs segfaulting, however.

Personally I think Ubuntu sucks big time, and is widely overrated.

Cheers,
Tink
