Emacs gpm mode not working

I'm using Slackware 14.1 32 bit with the default versions of emacs and gpm (24.3.1) and (1.20.7). GPM works fine in the console, but when I try to enable it in emacs with 'M-x gpm-mouse-mode', the minibuffer says 'Autoloading failed to define function gpm-mouse-mode'. Does anybody know what is going wrong?
