emacs gdb mode : irritating i/o buffer

When using M-x gdb in emacs ( i suppose 24 and later) you are now presented with two different buffers, one for gdb and the other for input and output which is irritating. According to manuals you can (set 'gdb-use-separate-io-buffer nil) to use just one buffer for gdb and i/o. Now setting this variable has no effect in addition you can not switch i/o buffer to other as it is a dedicated buffer.
