Elinks: zgv and other MIME handlers

The Elinks manual pdf refers to a features.conf file that doesn't appear to exist. What appears to exist is /etc/elinks/elinks.conf. This file has many of the same features purported to be in features.conf in the official elinks manual, but the formats are different.

(Wanted to include the URL to the manual here, but LinuxQuestions denies new members the ability to include URLs until 5 posts have been made)

I would like to open photo links and view them as more than ASCII, say with zgv. According to the above manual, I apparently have to specify the MIME handler to do it. That makes sense. Espcially in terms of "what" to do. But the manual seems to say nothing about how or where to do so; no clear-cut examples. Further, the manual refers to three things which must be specified for MIME handlers, the last of these being "terminal blocking". It notes that terminal blocking must be selected if a user wants to be able to exit the helper app (in this case an image viewer) and return to the browser. This sounds great, because who wants to restart the elinks app after each time they view a photo? But again, as to "how" this is accomplished, not a clue.

Hoping someone out there has elinks CLI savvy as I've already searched forums and googled. 1) which file and format to configure MIME helpers? 2) when configuring a MIME specific helper, how to implement "terminal blocking" so that it's possible to return to elinks without exiting and restarting it? Thanks.
