Maybe, this is a guess, but maybe can you edit the image files that it loads and put something like a transparent channel on them, and then have whatever you want be the background?
On a P2 system you can still run MDK91? But shouldn't it work like snail on this kind of config? Cos even with my machine its pretty slow compared to Win2k
the best way to do it is to edit /usr/bin/startkde
For mandrake9.1. the relevant lines are
if [ -e /usr/bin/ksplashml ]; then
ksplashml
else
ksplash
fi
It will look a bit different for other distros since the if part is mandrake specific. Basically look for ksplash in the script and comment out the relevant lines.

BTW. mdk9.1 runs fine on my P2-200Mhz....
Well, it's usable anyway. I recompiled the kernel to the minimum amount of modules and configured it to be PII specific, so it's got a very slight speedup. S'ok.
