eGroupware Issues

Guys, I am trying to set up egroupware, but I am facing some issues....

1. While going thru the check install script, I got 2 warnings which were something like

set up mbstring.func=7......I found out the [mbstring] section in a php file and added an entry as suggested in the warning, but that hasnt helped..anyways, I ignored that and continued further....

2. When I click the 'fudforum' icon, I get an error like

The 'files/' (/outside/webserver/docroot) directory exists, however webserver has no write permissions to that directory.

I have tried modifying all possible permissions for the directories inside /var/www/html....but I continue to get the same message

3. Another thing is, I would like to associate my own programs when I click icons on the main toolbar, how do i do that ?? for instance, when I click the fudforum icon, I would want to launch openwebmail...How do I do that ? what files would need to be modified ??

I have searched google a lot, but havent found any tutorial on how to attach another program with egroupware.....

I'd appreciate if someone can guide me here...

Possible answer to 1 & 2

I am also new to eGroupware, I only installed it on my company's newly created Mandrake server two days ago. Nevertheless I'm already very pleased with it and would recommend it highly.

As to point 1, have you made sure you have the 'mbstring' extension installed? Depending on your installation, (we use 10.0 Mandrake), you can select it through the Package manager. However this extension is not essential for eGroupware to work. I do not have it installed and so far have seen no problems.

For Point 2, have you created a folder outside the eGroupware directory in /var/www/html ? I have a folder under /var/www/ called 'Files' because it has to be created outside the /egroupware directory as per the setup procedure. You then have to make sure that the webserver (probably 'apache' on your system?) has write permissions and that you just set the path to this folder in the '/egroupware/setup' bit. Oh, and make sure that the webserver has write permission for the 'fudforum' folder in the egroupware directory.

As to point 3, this is beyond me at the moment and I'd like to know the answer myself.
While I've got your attention, perhaps you may be able to tell me how to setup my egroupware email to point to my Mailserver and link to Outlook?
